Fall 2009
Are you ready to pit your value investing skills against your classmates and Darden MBA students?
If so, submit your investment memo to the UVA Value Investment Pitch Competition by October 12, 2009!
If you are interested in entering the competition, please see the attached instructions sheet that provides detailed information on how to enter, submission deadlines, and guidelines to preparing for the competition. Here are a few need-to-know facts about the competition:
·Either individual students or teams of two students can enter the Competition.
·The Competition will involve three rounds; the first two rounds will be conducted independently at the McIntire School and the Darden School, and the final round will be conducted at the conclusion of the 2nd Annual Virginia Value Investing Conference on Friday, October 23.
·The investment idea may be a long or a short, and should focus on a company with a market cap of at least $500 million, preferably greater than $1 billion. Market caps above $250 million are permitted if the idea is a short with the potential of going to zero. The investment should have a return potential of 50% to 100% over two to five years.
·Support for the investment idea should be based on fundamental analysis (not technical analysis). Participants should focus on the quality of the idea, the research, and the presentation of the idea.
·The final round, involving the four finalists (two undergraduate and two graduate), will be held as the concluding session of the 2nd Annual Virginia Value Investing Conference in Old Cabell Hall on Friday, October 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
·The winning individual or team receives a trip to New York City and lunch with John Griffin, Julian Robertson, and other successful investors.
The UVA Value Investment Pitch Competition is open to undergraduate and graduate UVA students. At the undergraduate and M.S. in Commerce level, the competition will be coordinated by the McIntire Investment Institute, the Oceanus Alternative Investment Club, Alpha Kappa Psi, and the McIntire School finance faculty. You are free to contact members of these clubs or Professor David C. Smith (dcs8f@virginia.edu) for more information.
Purpose of the Competition
The competition is designed to meet a rapidly growing interest in the field of finance within the University of Virginia. While there are clubs, such as the McIntire Investment Institute, that provide students an outlet to explore this interest, we often find that students are intimidated by the contrast of experience and magnitude of membership. We believe this competition may be the first step for many students to test their knowledge and interest in the field of finance by competing in a University wide event. The investment competition will also be a valuable experience for participants to receive constructive criticism from a panel of judges made up of professors and professionals within the field of finance. Participants will extract the most value from this competition by receiving feedback and advice on their presentation style, PowerPoint design, research, and investment analysis.
Participants
The event will be open to all students at the University of Virginia. We encourage students across different majors to consider participating as this event can function as a stepping stone to greater understanding of finance. Participants are permitted to have one partner but may work individually as well. Please download the rules and regulations of the competition here.
